Words that make sense and words that do not

I know that all words have an origin, and logic was applied in most instances to attribute their meaning. I’m a fiend for a good word, even tracking interesting ones in my Notes app. Other words could have some minor improvements, as briefly explained in this list. Etymologists, please don’t get your knickers in a knot over this.

Words that make sense

  1. Sky. Almost too short and sweet for something so enormous and complex, but I think the quirky letters in ‘k’ and ‘y’ being majority of this word, redeem its complexity.

  2. Flame… tell me why I think this word is smirking. It knows the danger it presents, the heat it brings. Respect.

  3. Chair is so well suited to chairs. I feel like the ‘h’ almost imitates a typical chair shape, too. Personal favourite short word of mine. Just *chef's kiss*.

  4. Bolt in the context of lightning bolts - genuinely couldn’t be anything else.

  5. Brush (noun i.e. hairbrush, and the verb) in the context of brushing hair has elements of onomatopoeia, the swooshing sounds of brushing through long locks. Delicious.

Words that make less sense

  1. Tap is too cute a word for something that plays such a critical role in our day-to-day functioning and livelihood.

  2. Bucket is too long a word for what it is. I think buckets are more suited to a single-syllable word. Any suggestions?

  3. Statue could be a little bit scarier or ominous, considering they are typically of people and will stay in one place for decades. Deserves a spookier name in my opinion..

  4. Amazing. Obviously it means to be amazed but it has a merit limit. The overuse of the word makes one wonder, were you really amazed? Were you awestruck? Or was it just very good?

  5. Stairs. Again, just an improvement piece, I think there’s room for a more playful word there. Something that indicates its duality of ascension and descension, perhaps.

Honourable mention to moist, of course. Get that out of here.
