I think I like thinking here

As an overthinker, I do my fair share of thinking, for better or for worse. One thing that makes those thoughts better is the context in which they are done. See below, my rankings of the best and worst places to sit and ponder.

10. The hospital.

Whether you’re there for yourself or someone else, this is a terrible place to have too much time with your thoughts.

9. A work meeting.

You’ve probably missed some important information, which doesn’t feel nearly as free or fun as the daydream you were just lost in.

8. Lying in bed.

It’s normally when the deep, dark thoughts of something you’ve been avoiding come to the surface (like your car service) or an embarrassing moment from 2016 haunts you again (like that time you fell down a flight of stairs at school… and in a dress)

7. On a prescribed walk.

According to many psychologists and the Mel Robbins’ of the world, getting out for a walk is the perfect way to clear your mind. Unfortunately, when there are suddenly expectations that this walk will help you, rumination on what you need help with is common. Proceed with caution.

6. The hospital shower. According to reports (my friend who has experienced this), getting up and out of that damn hospital bed for the first time in hours, let alone days, brings more than just a physical cleanse. It sucks to still be in the hospital, but that shower turns over a new leaf of positivity in your mind.

5. The commute to and from work (particularly via public transport).

When I drove to work, I recorded many impressive (if not half-decent for that early in the day) thoughts on my voice memos. Now on public transport, I love the mystery and ambiguity that my outfit brings - fellow commuters could barely guess where I worked. The anonymity inspires me to let my mind paint a picture of how much girlboss I will bring to the boardroom today.

4. Getting a haircut.

Sitting, staring into the mirror, watching yourself transform can elicit existential questions about what getting this haircut really means to you… It’s one of my favourite places to let my creative thoughts run wild (maybe it has to do with the bleach on my skull, too).

3. Around a campfire.

Under the night sky, stars sprawled on its dark midnight canvas, it feels like the wide open space above is an extension of your mind - there’s room for everything. That is a good business idea; share it with the group in this safe space of sharing.

2. In the shower.

Free from the doomscroll and restrictions of everyday garments (your OOTD, as the kids say), other than some background music or singing yourself, it’s just you, the water and the Dove soap. Go ahead, prepare for that hypothetical confrontation.

1. In the car.

After a long drive. After a short drive. Hell, maybe it’s been three days since you returned from your last trip; time is irrelevant. A stationary car is oftentimes on par with a moving one in provoking proper profound ponderings.
